marekbrad Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Hi Folks Had a quick trwal and can't find an answer to this one.... Might be me so I'll apologise jst incase the answer is on here. Got a funny start menu/programs issue Some staff have complained about the fact that they do not want the students programs list in their start menu, so I have removed the gpo that redirects their start menu and gpo was set to revert back to users profile. However now when you click start>programs nothing happens and the users get no progs at all. I have a test staff user that when you delete thier profile all goes back to normal and they get the all programs from the local pc, so the gpo seems to have worked? ANy ideas? As I don't really want to delete staff profiles and loose all aplication settings et al.
LosOjos Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Check "Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs" and "Documents and Settings\[username]\Start Menu\Programs", is there anything in either of those?
marekbrad Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 OK checking random staff profile reveals start menu contains .. Accessories, Startup, iexplore, wmplayer all users on pc have full progs list for the pc
LosOjos Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 (edited) Go in to Regedit and look at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > User Shell Folders" It should show 'StartMenu' as (presuming Windows is installed to C) "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Start Menu" or alternatively "%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu" If it's showing something else, I reckon that you need to reset the Shell Folders to defaults, try the attached reg entry file for that (it just reverts all user shell folders to defaults, as I imagine it does when you delete the profile and let Windows recreate it, you can delete all the other entries from it if you just want to reset the start menu settings). If that fixes it, it's just a case of deploying the reg file as a startup script next time people login to fix their Start Menu EDIT: Credit to this site for the reg fix and info on default shell foldersshellfolders.reg.txt Edited March 12, 2010 by LosOjos 1
