Hi Guys

 

 

 

Just had to setup a Moodle server

 

I have installed it on Server 2008 (Processor is not x64, so could not install 2008R2:()

 

 

To install moodle I used the Microsoft Web Platform

 

Static IP address on the DHCP for the server

 

How do I go by getting this to an external IP addresss?

 

I have give the Council (ISP) the internal IP of the server and told them to open port 80 and the port number of MySQL (Not sure if thats need, but that one is there)

 

 

Any ideas why its not working?

Havent done no settings other than that

 

Also how to I get around of chaning the link to Moodle at the momment for example I have to type in a link like this 10.147.100.54/moodle. If I dont type in the moodle part, it goes to the deafult II7 page, How do I disable that and make Moodle have that link

for resolving internally you will need to set up a binding.

 

right click the site in IIS manager and click edit bindings. Now click add and type in the web address you want to use - school.ac.uk etc.

 

You will now need to make changes to your internal and external dns so that school.ac.uk resolves to the correct ip address. you don't want to be using the ip on the browser as this will become a pain latter on.

 

as for 213.38.46.22, that ip seems to be dead as it won't ping. i would check that you've got the right IP and then contact your provider - get them to shut the mysql while you are at it as you defiantly don't need that port open

dont think the ip address pings anyway from our isp, we have an exchange witch I tried to ping eariler to see if that work work, but that one had no reply eithier, and that ip address works

 

 

update - just had a talk with them and they put in the wrong internal ip address

do you mean the setting up the bindings?

 

go to administrative tools and open the iis management console (if the console isn't their then install either using WIP or adding the role).

 

From there right click the site in IIS manager and click edit bindings. Now click add and type in the web address you want to use - school.ac.uk etc.

 

This now means that when the server receives a request for school.ac.uk it knows which site it should be serving up. IIS will show that you have two sites, default and your moodle site.

 

You'll then probably need a dns entry on your local dns server to map school.ac.uk to the internal address of your server.

 

I wouldn't even attempt to set up the LDAP stuff until you've got the basics working.

Glad you're working on it. The top menus items don't work in firefox or chrome and it uses frames

if you have access to your internal dns server this should be simple. Once you've got that done the process for external access is roughly the same.

you don't need to delete or move this page. The bindings/ dns will sort this out for you. I

yep have access to the dns server, have access to everything far has I know

 

So your saying when I setup the binding I chose the website address. Does this mean I have to buy the domain name I want to use?

internally you can use any dns name you want - you can also add multiple bindings

 

externally you will need a domain or subdomain that points to your moodle ip address. A subdomain for example would be: moodle.ockendon.thurrock.sch.uk

 

to do this you would need access to your external dns config and you'd add moodle and the ip address, as your dns is externally managed you might need to contact them to arange this.
