DFS naming

Hi

 

thinking of setting up DFS.

 

Wonder whether its better to have a domain like our-school.local

 

cause currently its our-school.ourtownsname.sch.uk

 

am wondering if this long domain name is going to be a hinderance in anyway, viewing shares or accessing shares when typing manually or anything

Unless you have multiple forrests in AD or trusts then you can just use the netbios name anyway as it is resolved by the primary DNS suffux

 

\\our-school\dfs\share

 

changing a domain dns name is a big job anyhow and the above method works with both the full and the reduced name.

 

If your internal domain is resolvable outside the school and not owned by you it can cause issues though, offline files and other services rely on the DNS name to detect network states and if it is resolvable outside then some services can get veryu confused and slow. It also creates a security risk.

 

Changing a domain DNS is nontrivial though and can't be done if you have anything other than exchange 2003 installed without removing exchange entirely.

Ran through the rename process a couple of times, on lab servers.... but everytime i think about proceding for real i start having anxiety in my stomach.... so maybe i wont.

 

But maybe its all the coffee!!

avoid using the .local suffix as it can cause problems if you have any apple macs as .local is for the bonjour protocal on macs, they get confused. we use ourschoolname.edu for our domain name.

I saw a recent post that mentions that NETBIOS name is not used in server 2008 R2, this would be what I am upgrading to soon.

 

This would leave the FQDN on all the shares if true.

Latest advice i have from M$ is to use a .int for internal only domains.
