We have a new Dell Optiplex 745 workstation which is set up for our Headteacher within the Admin Workgroup. It has an attached Epson BJ Printer set as default and i have set up various other networked printers (colour and laser machines) for selection as needed.

All works fine when these printers are added; say a Brother laser HL-5130 and the print runs fine. However, if the workstation is rebooted even though the printers remain visible when selected he can only print to the default.

Anyone got any suggestions please - Dell were spectacularly useless - completely ducking the issue as it was not a hardware problem with the new PC.

Sounds to me like it could be a permission issue..

Are you having to login to gain access to the printers the first time you try to print to them or do you have to do something like go to a shared folder on the printserver machine first?

It may just be a case of adding the headteacher and/or the workgroup to the printserver so that it automatically provides them/him/her with access.. or you can use the workaround of mapping a shared folder on the printserver machine and making sure it reconnects on logon.

Someone else may have a more elegant fix however.

No printserver, I tried suggested workarounds on permissions last time I asked this question but to no avail. The rest of the workgroup have no problems printing to any of the printers.

Sorry, should have specified... by "printserver" I was meaning the computer that the printers were connected to and shared from

Thanks contink, I should have read your original response more carefully! I have a lot of learning to do!! All our printers are accessed through our lonesome server, so I guess it's a question of mapping the printer folder on the server from the Headteachers new machine. On the original addition of the printers the system did ask for log on, so, I'm hopeful that your mapping suggestion will achieve it permanently.

That sounds about right..

If you create an account on your server for the headteacher with the same login information you may find that has the desired effect but a mapped drive that autoconnects using valid login details should do the trick too..
