Using SIMS remotely without a TS, legal?

In the past ive looked at putting together a Terminal Server to allow staff to use sims on their staff laptops from home via the VPN.

 

As ive never configured a TS from scratch and i dont have a lot of time free at the moment ive not been able to get one sorted. However i realsied you can install sims directly onto a laptop then as long as the sims network drive is mapped and the VPN connected it works.

 

Now are there are legal or security issues with this method and that i should not think about implementing this and concentrate soley on getting a TS sorted anyone?

Depends if you've got enough bandwidth at either end in order to faciltate this.

 

TS should be the way to go, or if youve got SIMS learning gateway..?

It's easy enough - probably quicker than installing the client on a half-dozen laptops. See these other threads for some notes:

Me, I'm aiming for SIMS running via terminal services over VPN, it just seems like the easiest way. If you want to run the SIMS client directly you'll need to make sure you have MS SQL CALs for each client (unless you're using SQL Express) and, of course, appropriate CALs for the file server your SIMS share is on.

You can do this, but to be honest it can be problematic. It's better to Remote Desktop (with VPN enabled) into a workstation with SIMS installed. The workstation and SIMS would then be using a typical 100Mbps LAN connection and not a DSL connection.

If your using VPN to give staff access to SIMS remotely, I hope they are encrypted.

We've got a handful over encrypted VPN for domain member machines only. The CAL issue goes away if you're licensed by server processors instead.

We use SSL Explorer running on a linux web server which creates ssl tunnels and rdp sessions to some XP vm's on our network which the teacher then just logs in normally and its works fine as technically its just a normal pc. As we are trying to remove the need for us to supply teachers with laptops!!
