Had a report via a teacher today about dogpile.com - a search aggregator. Seems that image search "moderate" filtering is poor to say the least, searching for "hot" (which is a fairly innocuous and possibly innocent term) produced fairly sexualised images.

 

Switching safe search off produced topless images for the same term.

 

Block, block, block.

Its blocked when trying to search for images on the WSGFL, which i think is the same for LGFL aswell

Couple of comments:

 

* Dogpile does not currently have its 'Heavy' level of filtering turned on by Smoothwall. With your comments in mind, I will look into making that possible.

 

* Deep URL filtering will be active on image results. You may wish to block Unmoderated imagehosts (a new category) to combat some of the more risque results.

 

* Naturally, there is the option to block completely...

Wow... dogpile... That's a name I've not heard in ten years! I can't believe they're still going!

It's surprising that people out there are still turning to older search engines outside the "Big 3". Search engines like DogPile really are lagging behind in terms of realtime and social media content aggregation, unlike Yahoo, Google and Bing these days. If you want relevant (and safe) results, you'd be better off sticking to the forerunners in my opinion.

I agree too.

 

But there was a time when Dogpile, amongst others, was a good engine because it basically just did your search on a whole bunch of search engines, like Lycos, AltaVista, Yahoo, MSN, and gave you results from the whole bunch... which would save you from checking lots of different search engines manually... they all had wildly different results!

Whilst I agree with the comments above, I think the kids' "search quality metrics" differ from our own slightly...
