Mac Re-install problem

I have just purchased a Mac mini 1TB server , i dont want the Mac os on this so im trying to install snow lepeord 10.5 from a Original DVD.

 

so i boot holding down the option key

 

this presents me with the drive options to boot from, i select my external HDD as the mac does not have a dvd drive built in. and it just freezes right when i select the dvd drive. I have also tryed to boot from another external hdd which i use to image other macs and it freezes again when i select it, The only option it will boot from is the server HDD.

 

I have also run the install disk from the desktop and it restarts to install but the screen goes blank an nothing happens.

Update ** the Server os Disc will load

 

why does'nt the normal MAC OS X install?

OSX install disks will only support certain hardware. So if an old osx disk, it wont install as it doesnt know about mac mini server. The osx server disk that came with it will know about mac mini server and its hardware and therefore will install

You don't want snow leopard? I believe newer hardware 'requires' 10.6...

because mac mini servers came out arround the time of 10.6.2, earlier versions of 10.6 on disk will not work as the pre check will not recognise the hardware. What are you after from client osx that server osx wont provide..... The purple aura background istead of the blue aura background lol?

Well the Mac server is to be used by Students in the music department. Is there not much difference between the normal and server version then?

the server version doesnt have garage band etc on it?

it has itunes and all that jazz, and can run final cut, logic etc. depends how you are going to set up with logon etc, might be worth seeing if you can get a snowleopard install disk in store but making sure it installs 10.6.2 and giving that a try

a standard osx install wont have garageband on it either, thats added when you install ilife suite

If you have a 10.6 disc is there anyway to slip stream / intergrate the updates so you can create a 10.6.2 disc in a similiar fashion as updating a windows xp disc to say service pack 3 or w/e???

You're problem might be due to the age of your OS X client install DVD.

 

If it came with a machine that is older than the 9400/9600 NVidia graphics versions, it might be that the disc doesn't recognise the hardware. (You mention 'Snow Leopard 10.5'. If it's a 10.5 disc more than about 18 months old, it might not be 'aware' of the newer chipsets.)

oh cool can i install all the same software the client version has? Although i do want to bind it to the domain so the users home directoies are available.

 

might be better off getting the 10.6 version

In summary:

 

Server will run the apps client will run and in fact all the client stuff like front row, address book & itunes are there.

 

Im unclear if you can slipstream a disk, knowing apple, prob not.

 

If also unsure if you can bind a osx server to AD the same way as a osx client can.

 

If you buy, lets say a imac and then use the install disk in a macbook pro, it will not work, so I expect his is the case.

 

If you have a retail copy of snow leopard, but from before a machine came out, it will not work as the disk doesnt include the drivers or recognition keys for the new machine.

 

What to try:

 

Get the school to buy a £25 leopard install disk, making sure it is 10.6.2, or maybe if you delay 10.6.3, which will 'know' about your machine. Failing that be cheeky, find a 10.6.2 iso on a torrent side and see if that works

I would guess you can if all the servers' directory services (AD, OD) were turned off. This way it isn't trying to merge or replicate anything.

AFAIK OS X Server with no services activated is give or take the same as OS X Client.
