Hi,

 

Not too sure where this goes here, here goes anyway.

 

We have a program called Browse Control (By Codeworks) and its great. The only problem is we have merged with another school and they dont want to manually install it like we have done for ages as we only have about 300 machines to install it on. (and with the Ipod on its quite a dordle).

 

Has anyone managed to create an MSI for it for an RM CC3 Network, mine just fail.

There are two methods to remotely install BrowseControl Client on to desired PCs.

 

BrowseControl is distributed in MSI (Microsoft Installer) format. This facilitates the deployment of BrowseControl through Microsoft Active Directory, SMS, Altiris and many other Software Deployment Tools that support the MSI Standard.

BrowseControl has a built in Remote Installer. To use this feature follow the steps below. If you are running Windows Vista on the PC you intend to install the Client on, please disable UAC.

 

On the menu bar click on Advanced --> Remote Install Client(s).

 

Enter/Browse the path of the Client msi file on the Server computer.

 

Enter the Server name/IP address and the Client password. In case the Client password is not mentioned then the password is taken as the default ‘Admin’. Click Next.

 

Select the PC’s on the network where the Clients are to be installed. Click Next

 

Enter the Username and Password of an Administrator account of the PC where the Client has to be installed. Click Next.

 

The Client component will be installed on the selected PC.

Im quite happy to use the remote installed or mannually install, its the other school who wants the package.

 

The problem with the MSI is that it needs information i.e. server IP, port ...

 

Thats why i'm getting stuck it just doesnt roll out.

MSI's can be run in quiet mode, and can be transformed using an mst file (using Orca for example). How to use the Orca database editor to edit Windows Installer files

 

The MST would provide the extra details that the MSI needed.

It is easy enough to produce a transform to do what you require with this piece of software.

This is what I have in the ini file in the package area:-

Dont remember having any problems with it installing.

 

What service pack are on your workstations? Stations no longer shutdown when using browse control to automate the command, this is apparent since rolling out SP3!

 

If you use the original msi you will find it blocks all cd drives on the computers you roll it out to. I have a modified version with the function disabled by default.

What version of the client are u running on the machine? Can usually uninstall from the browse control console.

We deploy it via a windows startup script that looks like this:

 

"\\server\softwareshare\cwbcclient.msi" ALLUSERS=1 USERPARAMS="-pnswc Admin 8999 intranet somepassword somepassword" /L bcinstall.log /QN BCREBOOT=1

 

Works a treat
