...zoomed out and rotated the images using six degrees of control. In one part of the demonstration, he reached into a series of movies, plucked out a single character from each and placed them onto a “table” together where they continued to move.

Mr. Underkoffler said this gesture technology was already being used in Fortune 50 companies, government agencies and universities, and he predicted that it would soon be available for consumers. “I think in five years’ time, when you buy a computer, you’ll get this,” he said.

Some interesting statements. How viable do you think it is? Five years seems optimistic.

Don't forget that we already have things like Project Natal on their way ... and we have already seen things like this being done at MIT.

Now sixth sense i can see a use for; as a potable interface and VDU it has the potential to be great. But full gesture based interface for anything other than showing off to your mates, no thanks. It would be nice in a media centre type setup but for real life work... I just cant see anyone being faster waving their arms about then they would wiggling their mouse.

Personally im more interested in touch screen technology. Once tactile feedback is introduced (when you press a button it actually feels like you are pressing a button, and when you turn a knob...[well, to a point]) and they are cheap enough to have a 22-30'' screen ill certainly look at one mounted into a desk as a mirror of what it being displayed on the main screen. You could then have a keyboard, touchpad, sliders, knobs, etc all pop up independantly of what is being displayed on the main screen. Totally customisable to suit you and your apps.
