home folders getting wiped on windows 7 machines

Urgent problem,

 

Running 10 windows 7 machines in the library currently on a server 2003 network, users are having a problem whereby there home drives are getting completely wiped and left with only the folders i have set to redirect there, the permissions are completely reseting and not even allowing me to repair via previous versions!

 

Any ideas what i have done wrong here?

what are your settings on redirected documents in group policy? as in basic or advanced and what do you have selected under the settings tab?

I have:

Redirect to users home folder, aka %homeshare%%homepath%

grant user exclusive rights to documents: enabled

Move the contents of documents to the new location: enabled

Also apply to xp etc: enabled

Policy removal behavious: Leave contents

 

I think i have a larger problem with the my redirections though as if i say go into word and say save, in the menu i can see "93test" which is a local folder with all local folders within it (the user im using is 93test) and you can save to them etc, even though there is also a copy of these in the users H:\ drive!

 

The users H: drive is mapped at AD to: \\fs1\home$\2004\93test

 

This one isn't being wiped, but some users are, and the redirections aren't quite working properly!

basic - redirect everyones....

 

then second option

 

redirect to the user's home directory.

sorry i meant "redirect to the user's home directory"

 

All the pictures and music etc are set to follow the documents folder, the others like downloads are set to go to %homedrive%\Downloads etc so they should effectivly all redirect into the home folder, while it appears to be doing that it's also leaving a copy of the users main folder as you see in the screenshot with another local copy of all these folders on the desktop and as a selection on the save as menu

The home drive shows up as a drive, the H: drive to be exact

 

I feel like banging my head against a wall at the moment If only there was a nice simple GPO that said something like "redirect %username% folder" so the root folder of all my problems could just be plonked onto H: i'd be happy, rather than having to redirect each one individually

Yep, all set correctly, it's been running with the same settings for years under the windows XP machines

 

I appear to have now blocked access to the USERNAME folder using some random assortment of GPOs that i really should have writen down before changing (ill find out what they were in a minute)

 

So now that ive finally blocked any access to that it's just the mysterious case of the self deleting folders to solve, we must have had a good 50-100 users log on to the windows 7 machines by now, and we've had about 3 people who have come back with this problem that the contents of there home folder had been wiped

I seem to be getting this error in the event log of all my windows 7 clients:

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

 

DETAIL -

1 user registry handles leaked from \Registry\User\S-1-5-21-1325059995-2246464690-3277195018-6120:

Process 3600 (\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\winlogon.exe) has opened key \REGISTRY\USER\S-1-5-21-1325059995-2246464690-3277195018-6120

 

Any idea what that is?

AH HA i know why it's wiping the drives and why my documents redirects arent working properly...

 

We use Quotas for the kids, i found i was getting the message:

Failed to apply policy and redirect folder "Documents" to "\\fs1\home$\2004\93test\".
Redirection options=0x9211.
The following error occurred: "Failed to redirect because there is not enough disk space on the target folder "\\fs1\home$\2004\93test".".
Error details: "There is not enough space on the disk.
".

 

So i upped the quota on a test account, logged back in and low n behold it's wiped the H:\ drive and just plonked nothing more than the redirects in there

FIXED!!!!

 

Unticked grant user exclusive rights to documents and Move the contents of documents to the new location and it no longer wipes there drive, yay

You beat me to it! I was about to post just that - if you move the contents it removes them from their original place, rather than just copying them. Once you log off your policy wipes the profile. The original home drive is already empty. Edited February 12, 2010 by timzim

The other problem i had which i fixed by accident was sorted with the setting:

"Prevent users from adding files to the root of their users files folder."

 

im so so so so glad i decided to test windows 7 in the library for 5 months before deploying elsewhere
