If it was set up with a load of cogs instead of friction and a rack or teeth instead of a ruler it would work as it is "expected" to. But it's getting on a bit and I'm shattered, so what do I know.

Smaller the gear the faster it goes? Yup, the big wheel contacts the inner core of the cotton reels, but the outer rim of the reel is in contact with the surface. Bigger circumference means it travels further/faster. mb
