Window 7 And Dekstop.ini

This is my first post on this forum, Hope I can help and be helped with some error/problems.

 

Well my first problem, I am a brand new IT Admin at a school Whihc has been running for about 5 years now. In the first place the basicly contracted all jobs out to a company, which set this place up like it is a company, meaning no folder setup at all, users can see all mapped drives but cannot access them. and so forth, plus the pc are not even locked down(harderned), The school employed me to have someone on site, anyway.....

 

My first problem just got a site lience for windows 7 and 30 new machines, ghosting was a problem and so was sysprep. but that is not a really high issue atm the issue is 'desktop.ini' file being created on windows server 2003 in the students folder which renames there folder to 'Docments' and somehow when mapping drives this causes errors and users do not get their drive....

 

So that is my issue is there any way to fix this? if you knwo of a link that explains it good please post it.

This is a known issue since Vista.. see this post for more info..

 

The way I have resolved this was to ensure there was a "Documents" folder inside their home folders and may their home drive to that folder in AD

 

Eg: \\server\share\%username%\Documents

 

You may need to look at RoboCopy to move all the data - but its possible.

Is there a way in which I can stop the documents being placed inside the student folder, and I am not sure if this affects it but I am running Windows server 2003.

 

Also do you know what program is causeing it?

Again there is a Policy object somehwere that can stop that in Server 2008

 

User Config -> Admistrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Prevent users from adding files to the root of their Users Files Folder
