"Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband" looks like a really positive commitment!

 

Also, not quite sure why it's being described as fibre-optic? The text also says "engineer ... visit your home to upgrade your phone socket, set up your modem/router and check your internet connection" which rather sounds like the signal is still being delivered over good old twisted pair copper - the only fibre is going to be that at the exchange unless I've completely misunderstood this!

I believe BT in some areas will install fibre to the home, whereas in most cases they'll run fibre to every street, then run copper at short distance. At most your copper line should be no longer than 50m which of course will allow much greater broadband speeds.
