Imaging a shared drive partition?

Our 2k3 server is (stunningly) only running a single disk (it's RAID mirrored though) in three partitions - system, common (resources, utilitys etc) and "work" (user documents -%homeshare%%homepath% etc).

 

It's only 150gb, so unsurprisingly, we're about to run out of room. Here's my theory...

 

Install 500gb Sata drive.

 

Ghost image the Work partition to the new drive.

 

Extend new Work partition to fill new drive.

 

Hide old partition to ensure everything works fine.

 

Set new Work partition to correct drive letter.

 

Go.

 

Problems I can see happening:

 

At some point, the server is going to have two partitions attempting to share themselves as \\ourservername\work$.

 

Anyone got any suggestions on how to do this better or if this will, indeed, work?

I would replace your existing RAID mirror with a bigger one if it is otherwise running OK.

 

Ghost your server as is. Replace the existing drives with a larger pair, format in RAID BIOS, ghost the image back, resizing the partitions as required.

 

For all intents and purposes the server should be recognised as it was previously. Worst case, if it goes wrong, you still have the original pair of discs that you can plug back in.

Although make a note of which port is plugged into which disk, just in case it matters to the RAID controller.
