Site 'Blackout' to Protest the Great Firewall of Australia

In a simmilar protest to the one performed by New Zealanders last year a protest is scheduled for Australia day, blacking out the backgrounds of prominant Australian sites to protest their overreaching firewall.

The Great Australian Internet Blackout

 

The blackout uses a script so that it can be easily undone with a single click to allow reading of the site. Hopefully this will have the same affect of convincing the Australian government to reconsider its rather cloak and dagger filtering activities before they are abused further than they are now.

Yes the NZ protest which was about the copywrite law changes made the government stop that particular implementation and rethink it. It only resurfaced about a month ago here in a much more diluted and fairer form. Instead of being banned from the internet for being accused of pirating there is now an actual need for it to be proven and after two warnings you can be fined but only up to $15k instead of the crazy nonsence that those targeted in the states get hit up for. I think it also costs the company to report it so they can't just spam the system.

 

That protest used blacked out avitar pictures on various sites to get the message accross which was a little more indirect but it did convey the number of people opposed. The Australian one may not have the same quantification of numbers affect but it should make much more of an impression in a much shorter period of time and inform the public more thoroughly.
