wesleyw Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 We have a Polycom ViewStation PVS-1619 I was wondering whether you could help me? I can't find the documentation on it and most of the info on the unit itself says ISDN it has LAN connections on the back though! I just wondered how I could set this thing up? I've heard that it might be able to have an IP address allocated to it? Not sure about this at all to be honest never setup one of these before? Has anyone got the documentation for this at all? Wes

bossman Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 We are all setup and running here have been for about a year. Very good piece of kit. Have you any support from you LEA, you should if they have implemented it within your school. If you have bought it yourselves, yes it does need an IP address suitably on its own switch as well between your proxy and firewall is the required route, you need to sort with your ISP to allow it through your firewall as it plays havoc. Make sure you register with polycom for all the latest firmware upgrades as this can be a big help when moving forward with this technology. Our LEA ISP has equipped us with a global catalogue of all Durham schools and we now have regular video conferencing lessons.

I have one of these on my desk atm (dug out of a cabinet in the back of a cupboard) and am keen to see what it is capable of. I probably have a little more documentation and software than you - and am happy to send copies if you like...

bensewell Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 We have some polycomm kit in our school dont know which model it is but was supplied by the LEA but supported by a company called video nations. Ours plugs into our domain with a static IP and then plugs up to the rest of the LEA with another network card assigned another IP which can talk to the rest of the NGFL network outside of the school. It was a bit tricky to setup but once its all working its the bees knees. You can setup the gatekeeper using linux or through SSH (putty) and i think the gatekeeper uses port 2299? Can't be 100% sure because i've not done any config work in ages.

I was hoping that it could throw video over LAN to a browser but it doesn't seem to be able to. One of the English teachers bought it years ago and remembered it when the subject of video conferencing came up in a meeting... Struggling to find a use for it that teachers will embrace for lessons... or even a single lesson...
bensewell Posted July 6, 2007 Posted July 6, 2007 We use it like telephone, we arrange a call with another school for a set time and date and then use the polycomm to ring their gatekeeper then talk through the LAN using the kit. I've never tried to use a web front end because our polycomm plugs straight into a projector / screen.
