Hi everybody!

 

I run Seti@home and have done for a few years now, I have created a group and was wondering if anybody was interested in joining!

 

The group is located at Project Cerberus I currently have about 15 people who are singing up to the seti project, I would be very greatfull if you could spare some free processing time!

 

If we get enough people from Edugeek on the group we may become UK # 1, that would be good!

 

If your not sure what seti is, please see SETI@home remember to join Project Cerberus after you have joined up and connected to the seti at home project!

It is a distributed computing project where lots of computers around the world each get small packets of information called work units. These are just short chunks of recorded signal from the ARCIBO radio telescope, each computer scans through the work unit looking for structured signal pulses that may indicate an artificial source outside earth origin.

There was actually a case where a school admin in the states got fired for having it on several thousand school machines without permission so be careful where you put it Slashdot | SETI@Home Install Leads To School Tech Supervisor's Resignation

 

I did run it for a while but ended up switching to Einstein@Home a bit later to help with the processing of their new gravitational sensor array data. I also participate in Folding@home and even joined the eduGeek group for that. If anyone else is doing a little Folding and would like to help out the link is here

Folding@home is tasked with doing simulations of protein folding which could help fix everything from alsheimers to the common cold as well as help with the fabrication of the next generation of CPUs.

There is also the option of the WorldCommunityGrid, which does a large variety of medical related projects such as aids research, Folding, Muscular Dystrophy etc...

I agree they are all worthwhile projects especially the medical re-search ones, but for me its Seti@Home :-) who know's I may partake in Folding also soon!

 

Like I said any help toward seti would be great. Otherwise if seti is not for you join Folding its an excellent cause, even better join both!

We are no longer distributing tasks. The SETI@home message boards will continue to operate, and we'll continue working on the back-end data analysis. Maybe we'll even find ET!
