LG TV Hack

I have just bought myself a new TV for my bedroom to replace the dinosaur and finally have a decent size screen for playing 360 in Full HD.

 

I finally decided on the LG 32LH3000 model from [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-32LH3000-32-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B001UHMT4C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262020807&sr=8-1]Amazon.co.uk[/ame] for £329 on the 29th Dec (brand new not refurbished ) - Have just noticed that its shot right up in price.

 

I set it up to the pc last night so that I can finally watch the movies I have. I was trawling the web as I usually do (sure does feel wierd browsing FB on a 32" screen) and came as a hack that enables play back of video files {.dat .mpg. mpeg .ts .trp .tp .vob .mp4 .mkv .avi .divx, including 1080p mkv files}, audio files and image files from the onboard usb service port. In simple terms your LCD TV becomes an HD media player without the need for the PC.

 

Within 20mins I had compleated the hack - I had to downgrade the FW, enable the hack then upgrade it back to the original and latest FW with the hack still enabled.

 

I'm astonished that this feature is inbuilt into these models, yet disabled by default. why?

My guess as to why its disabled would be due to licensing of the codecs required to play these files.

Yeh I bet the US/Japan have a similar model which has them and they dont bother revising the hardware fully.

Much cheaper to flick a killswitch in firmware.

Weird, perhaps its another EU legality as even NZ gets the model that supports the video playback by default.
