Hi all,

i'm trying to set up a file server for our ICT students to use but i'm having problems sharing files... .well in fact viewing the shares on a windows workstation.

i have samba and ntfsutils installed on a ubuntu karmic server with gnome.

i've formatted a drive to ntfs and mounted it, i can create a folder and share it but dont seem to be able to change permissions, whenever i do they just flip back to whatever i changed them from.

what am i doing wrong?

it's going on a standalone network so security will be minimal

Do you want it integrated into Active Directory for seemless access?

Also I would recommend using a file system more suited to linux like ext3, ext4, brtfs or xfs. I use XFS over lvm2 for a few samba servers at the schools I work for.

Nah i dont want it to be part of the school network, all i want is a basic file server for the ICT kids to mess about on. i'm just after somthing that'll let anyone access it...

not fussed what file system it uses so long as a windows based PC can access it.

if this goes well i might well start looking at linux NAS boxes that i could use on the schools network so if you do have any additional information on attaching to AD that would be very much appreciated.

thanks

When I originally set it up I used this link.

Even for just a basic FS I would recommend a linux filesystem. Incase you need to do anything in the future with this simple fileserver it will give you more options then ntfs can on linux.

XFS works lovely - thanks.

i've been trying to get drive to automount on startup;

mount directory created in /media

chmod 777

fstab entry made

the drive will now automount but i now cannot remotely access the server

i assume i'm missing some sort of permissions somewhere?....

What do you mean? Can you give more info?

Can you ssh to the box?

Can you browse samba shares?

Can you see samba shares (but not access them) or is there none?

If its permissions it could be a few things. Can you paste the samba config? And a ls -l of the shared directory?

with the auto mount configured i can access the drive fine on the linux server box but can no longer ssh, browse or even see shares from a remote windows system.

if i remove the mount line from fstab and use the disk utility to mount the drive i can then access via ssh and browse share remotely.

please excuse my incompetance, i'm slowly getting there

not sure what i did wrong as i followed the same guide again but it now works!

Thanks for your help

Good to hear. Your previous post baffled me. I tried to replicate the problem but couldn't work out what you did.
