SQL servers down

Bit of bad luck - SQL websites servers have gone down just at a time when websites being used for school closure/opening news

 

They b*&^%y gremlins always know the best time to do their stuff!

I think they are crumbling under the load

It's the LancsNGfL web servers that are struggling Si. Last night I had to put a message on ours and the MySQL server kept bombing out. At that point there was 140 peoploe looking at just our website. The LancsNGfL people obviously never expected a lot of people to use the websites

Hint: temporarily replace your site with a plain html page, it should reduce loads you will only have to rely on one server (the webserver) compared to having to rely on mysql as well. And they can be cached easier.

Tried plain index.html which works fine but problem is that people might have bookmarked/already be on the snow info url and some of my heads and teachers directly edit the site without telling me so we could end up with conflicting info.

 

But nice idea

I'm thinking some sort of review needs to be done regarding the capacity of the LancsNGfL webservers.

 

All I want to do is add a new article regarding tomorrow's partial closure but it bombs out every time I click save!!!

Im currently putting all my sites into maintenance mode to try to help reduce load on webservers - see this thread

One of the problems will be getting the amdin interface to work long enough to enter maintenance mode though!

If it's joomla 1.5 (don't know about 1.0) you can go into the configuration.php and just change the closed variable and that will save you having to get into the admin console.

 

Just make sure you check the permissions so that you can write the file back again (defaults to read for all) - caused me 10 minutes of confusion

The websites seem accessible now so I suggest editing now (if your still up!) as the more we do - the more we might help ourselves

I had a chat to Martin Quinn earlier... to cut a long story short, the webservers have experienced a three-fold increase in traffic and 'every effort is being made to prevent the situation happening again'.

 

The advice is to log all your concerns through the Westfield Centre so that there is a record and it is expected to be discused at the next LancsNGfL meeting which is at the start of February.

Just spoken to Westfield and I am confused as they are saying they don't think last weeks problems were due to the traffic capacity of the servers :confused:

 

I'm reverting my websites to normal and we'll see what happens next time
