Power off

Hi all,

I have a question that seems to have loads of answers on the web , but none apply to me.

 

The problem i have is that my macbook works fine with the power connected and behaves as it should. However, disconnect the power cord and its a different story. What I have noticed is that when my mac is plugged in and if i press anywhere on the left hand side of the keyboard from the touch pad round the esc key and my mac just switches off. no warning, no questions, nothing. This only happens when it's pressed !!! It's becoming a bit of headache especially as i tend to use my mac more than my laptop to email and write documents etc.

 

Does anyone have any ideas what could of happened?

Basic electrical problem, poor contact somewhere or something shorting. Possibly battery contacts.

 

If it was me, I'd open it up to have a look for dry joints or stray wire, but if you don't feel comfortable leave that for someone who knows their way around inside on

Do you have Apple Care and/or is it under warranty? If it is STOP NOW and get them to look at it before you invalidate anything opening the case.

 

Edit: Obvious point- presumably you've reseated the battery and visually checked the contacts first?

I have had my MacBook for over 3yrs now and I don't have apple care and yes I have checked the battery contacts.

hmm is the battery located on the left hand side of the keyboard?

 

if it is maybe its the contacts on the inner side on the laptop where the battery connects to, which intern connect to the motherboard.

Given that the Mac works fine on mains power the problem must be battery related. The battery on many white Macbooks is underneath the bit you're pressing on, so I would guess that it's disconnecting when you press it. Yes, it could be an internal electrical problem. However, there were a few documented cases of Apple, sony and Toshiba batteries swelling slightly in use, so you could have a battery which has gone out of shape. If you know someone else with a similar model, you might want to ask if you can just try their battery in your Mac to see if a different battery cures the problem. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but it could be simply a case of replacing the battery. Your local Apple dealer or Apple Store might be able to help you by trying a different battery for you while you wait.

After trying Robbocop's suggestion I now have a fully functioning macbook.
