llawwehttam Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 on my old desktop machine. Over the last few days when I turn my machine on I have had to hold the power button in for 10 seconds before booting. I used the sensors command and this is what I got. llawwehttam@Blackblood:~$ sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +21.8°C (crit = +75.8°C) smsc47m192-i2c-0-2d Adapter: SMBus I801 adapter at 1400 +2.5V: +2.62 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +3.32 V) VCore: +1.68 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +2.99 V) +3.3V: +3.37 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +4.38 V) +5V: +5.18 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +6.64 V) +12V: +12.06 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +15.94 V) VCC: +3.46 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +4.38 V) +1.5V: +1.69 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +1.99 V) +1.8V: +2.39 V (min = +2.39 V, max = +1.19 V) ALARM Chip Temp: +29.0°C (low = -128.0°C, high = +127.0°C) CPU Temp: +53.0°C (low = -128.0°C, high = +127.0°C) Sys Temp: FAULT (low = -127.0°C, high = +127.0°C) cpu0_vid: +1.550 V Should I be worried and if so what should I do? It looks to me as if the PSU is faulty. Am I right? Any help appreciated. I do not understand the cpu temp as I have very good cooling on it and with ubuntu 8.10 it rarely went above 32°C.
pritchardavid Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) Cpu temp at 32 degrees is quite good, thats quite cool Much me too much voltage going onto the mobo to do that Yep looks like you power supply may have developed a fault better wait for more people to confirm this, not that great which power supply problems Edited December 30, 2009 by pritchardavid
SYNACK Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) You probably don't want to hear this but it may well be your motherboard which has had it. The PSU regulates to 12V, 5V and 3.3V. Stepping down to lower voltages like 1.8 for the CPU and such is generally handled by the voltage regulation circutry on the motherboard and the VRM modules if they are present (usually only in multiprocessor server setups). If your lucky it is just a funky waveform comming out of the PSU that is not stepping down properly but it could be one of the regulators on the MB. Easiest way to test is to swap out the PSU and put the old one on a tester. If the problem persists you will probably need a new motherboard. Edit: The increase in temp also indicates that the CPU may be getting over volted which is likely to cause damage in the sort term so best bet would be to run it as little as possible until you have it repaired or else you may be up for a new CPU too. The temp is nothing to worry about just the risk of overvolting which the temp spike could indicate. Edited December 30, 2009 by SYNACK
llawwehttam Posted December 30, 2009 Author Posted December 30, 2009 Thanks for the advice. I have 2 spare PSU's and 3 spare motherboards so I'm not too worried and this system is only running a P4 with 2GB DDR Crucial ballistix ram in 4 512 strips that I was considering throwing out. Its kinda my testing system but I haven't the money to get a new one so I hope I can fix it.
llawwehttam Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 Right peeps. I just replaced the PSU, the motherboard, the CPU fan and a few other fans and installed dustguards but when I booted back up obviously with a new motherboard the sensors were set to relate to the old board and I got this: llawwehttam@Blackblood:~$ sensors w83627thf-isa-0290 Adapter: ISA adapter VCore: +1.62 V (min = +0.70 V, max = +1.87 V) +12V: +11.73 V (min = +1.46 V, max = +0.55 V) ALARM +3.3V: +3.23 V (min = +0.77 V, max = +3.33 V) +5V: +5.07 V (min = +3.41 V, max = +0.11 V) ALARM -12V: +6.06 V (min = -14.09 V, max = -14.91 V) ALARM V5SB: +4.97 V (min = +4.30 V, max = +1.13 V) ALARM VBat: +3.28 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.08 V) ALARM fan1: 0 RPM (min = 376 RPM, div = 128) ALARM CPU Fan: 2463 RPM (min = -1 RPM, div = 4) ALARM fan3: 0 RPM (min = -1 RPM, div = 128) ALARM M/B Temp: +23.0°C (high = +8.0°C, hyst = +0.0°C) ALARM sensor = thermistor CPU Temp: +30.5°C (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C) sensor = diode temp3: -48.0°C (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C) sensor = thermistor beep_enable:enabled Obviously none of this is correct or my system would have died instantly but I don't know how to reset it. I tried sudo sensors-detect but that did nothing. Should I reinstall lm-sensors. Problem is I clear my bash history so I don't know what package generated these, anyone recognise it? I think ist lm-sensors but I'm not sure. Alternatively I could just re-install as I have a backup on my laptop's second HDD.
kmount Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 It appears to be using a different template for want of a better word to the last time. I don't use lmsensors much anymore but when I did I'm sure it generated some random stuff for me too! (I'm just emerging it now to run it and see what I get). Have you noticed any problems with the machine since changing the parts?
llawwehttam Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 (edited) Problems? haha no...the machine is running better than ever. The BIOS tells me the cpu temp is now 31.5 °C with the new heatsink and fan and everything is running fine. DVI that I thought was dead ages ago lives again so It was a faulty board I was using before. I'm reinstalling Ubuntu as I prefer a clean OS when I change important parts and I have a separate /home so I won't lose anything. Edited December 31, 2009 by llawwehttam
llawwehttam Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 Ok here is what I'm getting with my new PSU and motherboard with lm-sensors. llawwehttam@Blackblood:~$ sensors w83627thf-isa-0290 Adapter: ISA adapter VCore: +1.62 V (min = +0.70 V, max = +1.87 V) +12V: +11.73 V (min = +3.40 V, max = +0.55 V) ALARM +3.3V: +3.25 V (min = +0.77 V, max = +3.33 V) +5V: +5.04 V (min = +3.41 V, max = +1.81 V) ALARM -12V: +6.06 V (min = -3.56 V, max = -14.91 V) ALARM V5SB: +4.92 V (min = +4.30 V, max = +1.13 V) ALARM VBat: +3.28 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +0.08 V) ALARM fan1: 0 RPM (min = 114 RPM, div = 128) ALARM CPU Fan: 2463 RPM (min = -1 RPM, div = 4) ALARM fan3: 0 RPM (min = -1 RPM, div = 128) ALARM M/B Temp: +25.0°C (high = +8.0°C, hyst = +0.0°C) ALARM sensor = thermistor CPU Temp: +36.5°C (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C) sensor = diode temp3: -48.0°C (high = +80.0°C, hyst = +75.0°C) sensor = thermistor beep_enable:enabled Obviously ignore the min/max and alarms. The readings are right though, except for the -12V as that entry is supposed to be at +6V. I'm running quite a few apps so I'm very pleased with the CPU temp. Is there any way to change the man/max values as the program is way out. If not is there another sensor program that works with conky?
