CyberNerd Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 This is probably a really stupid question: need Zip compression software - requirements: No password protection Runs on windows with GUI Free for comercial / edu use no spyware no advertising preferably saves to .zip as default can I shutdown the password thing on 7zip ?
mrforgetful Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Err, didn't you just describe something exactly like Windows Compressed folders? Right Click > Sent To > Compressed Folder
tom_newton Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 by "no password protection" you mean "does not support password protection"?
Geoff Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I use 7-Zip here. http://www.7-zip.org/ There's a prebuilt MSI you can deploy it with on the download page. It's GPL.
CyberNerd Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 Of course, didn't think of that because its such a rubbish feature - poor compressiuon format, no passwords. Just what I need. I'll look into enabling it on 2k
CyberNerd Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 @ geoff. indeed, but Boss doesn't want kids to password protect their files. They have no right to privacy here (real world training I assume). Can you disable the feature ?
Geoff Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Sure. Just comment it out in the source and recompile.
CyberNerd Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 configure make && make install ? Thought not. I'll probably need to buy a tonne of other software to do it and It'll take me an age. Anyway It seems enabling folder compression on 2k is pretty easy, thanks though. http://www.petri.co.il/enable_compressed_folder_in_w2k.htm
Geoff Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 It'll compile with the cut down MS VC++ you can get off the MS site.
Ric_ Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 @Cybernerd: For ease, simply make it School policy to delete any password protected files. They'll soon learn that they can't hide their stuff that way.
