ubuntu in virtual box on server 2008

i running ubuntu 8.10 within a sun's virtual box on a server 2008 server being a DC, DNS. i can vnc into the server and ping it but apache is having issues. Anyone else seen this? nither the address or localhost will connect to the webserver?

 

i moved the image onto the server after making it on my laptop (xp). no problems until it hit the server.

are you sure the apache is startingproperly? my favourite mistake when building linux servers it to install and start the service, but forget to edit the sysvconfig/chkconfig to get it to start on boot.

 

seems unlikey it would work on xp, but not windows server.

Even when i start apache2 manually it says ''ok'' but i cant access it. The conf file worked on the the xp machine (withint the same VM), and i havent changed it. I'm gunna try reinstalling ubuntu and LAMP from scratch to see if that helps. I just though it could be something to do with it being on a DC, as i had problems installing things on them before. But even then i should be able to see it using http://localhost correct? So the problem must be with apache?

have you tried accessing it by IP address.

 

depending on how the DHCP and DNS client is configured it may not create its own entry in the DNS server (this is how it is supposes to work, DNS should tell the client what it is called)

The client (ubuntu 8.10) withing a virtual box is configued with a static IP, and DNS server i have on the network. I don't use windows DHCP, nor a windows DNS for non windows devices.

 

Yes i've tried both it's interernal ip 127.0.0.1, external 192.168.x.x and localhost, non of which work from within the virtual box. The external IP doesn't work from any machines on the network. but i can VNC into it using the network address.

last time I used Sun Virtual box i found that the NAT option was a bit broken on my system

 

try changin Settings>Network from NAT to Bridged adapter

same NAT isn't the best option, i only ever used bridged as it's more reliable.

I solved it by re-installing ubuntu from stratch.
