I can't ping a host only a FQDN. Any suggestions?

Hi All,

I have some spare time so i am back trying to get my macs to authenticate with server 2008 Active directory domain.

I have noticed that a client mac cannot ping a host name eg server1 only the fqdn eg server1.prentonhigh.local.

I have checked my forward lookup zones and the server i am trying to ping is in there and it's in the reverse as well.

The mac itself is pointing at the correct dns server so I am a bit stuck!

Anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

I think short host names are sometimes resolved usign NetBIOS not DNS. So the mac isn't going to play ball with that.

This can be the case, but it is more likely that the mac hasn't been set to automagically append the domain name.

Don't ask me how to set the mac up so that appends a domain, I don't have enough (current) mac experience. My mac days ended with the old Quadra's running AFP to Netware servers.
