[ms office - 2003] Microsoft Word will not save

We have a batch of laptops available for students to use running WinXP SP3 and Office 2003. These laptops have a 'Local User' account set for the students to use when wireless is not available. On some of these laptops, when you click on Save or Save As in MS Word nothing happens. If you close the document and click yes to save, nothing happens, if you click no the document closes, then if you click to close Word a message comes up saying changes have been made to the Global Template and do you want to save, if you say yes the message goes but Word stays open and the same appears when you click to close Word again.

 

This only affects the 'Local User' account, the local admin or network user accounts don't seem to have the problem. I have tried deleting the profile for 'Local User' but this has not cured the problem.

 

Has anyone come across this problem before, I have run all the latest Office updates but no joy.

If you leave it for say, 5 minutes - it should pop up an error saying path not found, I have this on our laptops when they switch off the wireless by accident and it loses the network path, looks like it hangs but its just searching for the default save folder in the background...

 

I'm not sure where you set this though, might be worth leaving one for about 5 minutes and seeing what happens

Any reason why they are not connected to the wirelss all the time?

 

Word is probably looking for a network location to save the document, which is not available anymore.

I'll try leaving for 5 min or so and see what I get.

 

We don't have wireless in whole school so they have local accounts to allow use of laptops in those areas. In those areas they would never of had a network connection to be able to lose. Local User has been set with no network share available.
