anyone seen this before?

I have an old laptop that a friend has asked me to look at, being the nice guy I am I said ok, it was booting up into blue screne of death and my friend had no system disks, I have formatted the hard drive and re-installed xp, I have searched the internet for the drivers and installed them all (as far as I can see) everything was going well until I tried to access the microsoft updates webpage?

 

Most other pages load up fine? seems to be pages that have security warnings? hOWEVER i managed to get onto file hippo and download internet explorer 8?

 

Any thoughts or solutions?

The only time I've ever had problems accessing the windows update site is when the time and date of a machine have been incorrect.

confiker blocks access to windows update but leaves most sites alone i believe

I would go with the bios date thing as mentioned above. The errors that usually come up can be checked out to see why it would not update.

The time is sync with time.microsoft...

 

interestingly enough we had confliker on our school system a little while ago, I have used my memory stick to transfer drivers and what not across... wonder if thats it... will investigate a little further.
