virus scan

We use RM Virus protect on a CC4 network which is basically symantec anti virus. I have setup the scan of workstations to start at 12:30, I did this because lunch is between 13:00 - 13:30 and the scan can take any where between 1 and 2 hours so the majority of it will happen over lunch.

 

I have had complaints that the workstations have become really slow to the point of becoming unresponsive during this time.

 

Does anyone else have this problem?

How else or when do you do your virus scan?

 

I am thinking of setting up a schedule to start the workstations before anyone gets into work in the morning then schedule the scan to start soon after.

That's what I do, it's scheduled for 6:30 Monday, and I use WOL to start the computers up earlier on Mondays to ensure they're ready for people to logon.

if the machines are running some form of on access scan then is there really any need to run a full scan every day?

 

as long as the servers are configured to run a full scan on a frequent basis the risk of infection should be reduced to a Negligible level.

I agree our users are only basic users so can't write to anywhere other than their profile folder which we delete at each reboot. We run active virus scaning on clients and on servers then run a full virus scan once a week on the servers which hardly ever turns up anything exiting. I then sometimes run a full scan on clients in the hols which again hardly ever turns up anything interesting.

The servers have always been scanned regularly so I will leave that schedule as it is.

I will change the workstation scan to once a month and do it in the morning to reduce the impact.
