Secure Folder

W2k3 Server just used as file server really.

 

2 logons - pupils and staff.

 

pupils work in pupils shared folders

staff files in staff shared folder.

 

All computers have logons pupil and staff - domain has same two users setup and same passwords.

 

New head would like a teacher (not staff which includes parent helpers etc) only accessible folder.

 

So I'm looking for some method of having a shared folder that asks for authorisation each session.

 

Any ideas or will I be forced to create a new teacher user on all my machines.

 

Or worse still - will I have do things properly now!!!!

Do it properly.

 

1. Run a domain.

2. You can keep your generic pupil login, but you need to make a login for each member of staff. Leave the teacher login incase of forgetfulness or new staff.

3. Give each teacher a seperate my documents with folder redirection.

4. You can keep the old shared teacher area, just set it up so that they can all access it and give them a desktop shortcut or something.

Just to clarify following Geoff's post.

 

I don't need each teacher to have a secure area.

 

I'd like a secure area for all teachers. (for SEN Assesments etc)

 

Pref without having to make them join the domain or creating a matching domain/ client computer logon.

 

I just want the system to ask for authorisation when they access the teacher only shared area from a shortcut on the desktop to prevent non-teachers from reading the files.

Can you not create a shared folder on the server that only has rights to be accessed by administrators and another new local user that you create.

 

Then give them a shortcut that uses runas to access this shread folder this will prompt them for the password for the user that you've set?

I've set up user teachers.

Created shared folder \\school_serv\teachers - only users teachers/admins have access.

 

I've got this to run as a shortcut on the desktop

%windir%\system32\runas.exe /user:[email protected] /netonly cmd.exe

 

to prove that it asks for password and then executes something.

 

but I can't work out the syntax to use it to open up the folder \\school_serv\teachers.

 

Any ideas please?

Should do the trick (Although I havn't tested it)

No that won't. Explorer can't be used directly through runas. It probably thinks you're trying to run as secondary shell.

 

Have to use internet explorer executable instead.

%windir%\system32\runas.exe /user:[email protected] /netonly "C:\program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe \\school_serv\teachers"

 

Don't forget the quotes.

Passworded folders will not be available in the final professional edition of Vista I read. This was because major business did not want users creating a password protected directory where all kinds of crap could be installed. I also expect it will be removable via GP if left in and any NM worth his salt will have it disabled straight away.
