Hi everyone,

I have an issue when students try and access the student drive at the same time eg 25 students \ the computers freeze sometimes and sometimes the thumbnails of photos wont appear.

What do i need to do to enable 25 students to access the same share at the same time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could be a variety of issues. If you have a low spec or old server with limited network speed (10/100) the you may experience a bottle neck there. If the students share is on a single drive i.e. not a spanned\raid volume that would most definately cause a lag, especially if the images are quite large.

Oh, and try not using the tumbnail view as this is proberbly the bit that is taking up the most time as 25 computers are all trying to read many pictures on a single drive to create the thumbnails!

The only real solution is to have a decent server, and a fast enough notwork to support the amount of client machines on it TBH

Yeah, we have a network like that too!

Is it a proper server or just a recycled workstation? what os is it running?

 

How much memory does it have?

If you are going to have large access events, you may try to set that server up as a file server, and get two or 3 NIC cards and team them to spread the wealth. I agree as long as the server has a nice raid array, up to date firmware and drivers, you should be able to hand out well over 25 access hits at a time with no issues.
