shutdown script for Macs

does anyone here employ shutdown scripts for their mac networks?

We do it through apple remote desktop, this allows us to shutdown all the mac's whenever we need to and we can also set it to start up and shut down at a certain time. Although i think you can just use a script to shut down all of them without needing apple remote desktop

I think it would be a cron job, but this has move over to launchd now? I use ARD as well and have WGM set up to tunr the machines on each week day at 8am.

Hi Mark! You should really be using launchd. It is still possible to use cron in 10.5. I don't think it's there anymore in 10.6 although the manual pages are. What a surprise.

There is no real need to use a shutdown script as there are tools you can readily use that achieve the same thing without resorting to the command line. If you have OSX Server create a Computer Group and apply an appropriate Energy Saver Preference. Failing that the other options work equally as well. You can also do this locally by defining a setting in the Energy Preferences Pane.

 

Alternatively you could use Automator or if none of this is to your taste you could use a 3rd-party application:
