Hello all,

Provisionally one of my schools which is running RM CC3 have asked me to convert this to a vanilla setup. All RM applications come in an RM-made-compatible MSI, but is there any reason why I cannot use these MSIs on a standard vanilla network? Many thanks!

RM use industry standard msi's so no reason at all why they can't be used - check that the in house made msi's have no explicit links to the RM server.

Unless there's licensing stopping you using a particular application as some I have seen say "For use on a Community Connect 3 network" I've not ever had a problem using an RM MSI on a Vanilla machine but it's typically the other way round I've done it using Vanilla MSI's on an RM Network no problem.

The only problem that you could run into with an RM CC package is if it uses some shared resources (such as Serif PagePlus' Wizards).

These are usually hardcoded to be installed onto the P: drive which (as you're probably aware) is what RM uses for its Shared Areas.

But as other people have said, there shouldn't be a problem most of the time.

Also check if they came from a "Curriculum Choice" installation pack. There may be some licensing issues there.

That might be what I was referring to, been out of the RM loop for a while now.

I did have a good look and most of the applications they're using are not made by RM. There are about 5 or so RM apps as well as all the RM admin tools. It's going to be a big job, but certainly interesting. I think I have a good idea how I'm going to tackle it!

Thanks for all the pointers!

Give me a shout if you need a hand with anything specific, I've been tasked to do a similar job creating a vanilla network to mimic the functionality of a CC3 network without the bloat/drama/cost and so far it's working pretty well indeed.

That's essentially what I specialise in too and thanks for the support :) Always good to talk to someone who's actually done this particular migration. I think I've done most others.
