We are about to launch our Learning Gateway to give parents access to student data from SIMS

 

For those that have already done this - How did you go through the implementation process of giving parents access? For the first year at least we are using a hosted sharepoint server if that makes a difference.

 

Did you have a year group test it out first?

How did you create the new users.

When creating users - did you stick to one child = one user/password or did you create users for each parent, I'm thinking of seperated families here.

 

Any other pointers or advice would be welcome.

We have a rough plan but parent training was not part of it. We were going to issue a guide produced by us. Introduction to the system would be done at parents evenings etc.

How are you going to support this, in terms of 'I have forgoten my password' this is something that will drive you mad.

We are looking at that problem now. Apparently there is a web part for it which asks for an answer to a secret question but it seems it only exists for Capita hosted solutions. We are looking at producing our own if we can.

I ran this as a trial to a small cohort of parents (Headteachers Reference Group) and will roll out whole school after the October Half Term holidays.

 

Sessions will be ran during parents evenings for parents to drop in and have a play with the system - with regards to the password changes I would imagine you would need either a secure question webpart or the parents requesting a change of password via telephone and you posting out a new password.

 

For the initial rollout parents will receive 2 seperate letters - One for their username then after a couple of days there password, similar to a credit card and PIN situation to safeguard our students.
