Hi, this is my first post to these forums.

I'm looking for a little bit of help. The school I work in bought some new Dell Optiplex 760's PC's back in March for one of our classrooms. However one of the PCs is no longer recognising the monitor. I have tried plugging the monitor from another PC which I know works into it and the PC doesnt recognise it. I have also tried plugging in the monitor from the faulty PC to one which works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is the pc booting or is it stuck in post?

Will it show the boot screen and then go off when it gets to windows?

Will it boot in safe mode?

Do you have any numbers lit up on the front of the pc? if so what are they?

Which form-factor 760? They come in a variety of flavours, USFF, SFF, Mini-tower?

We have around 80x Optiplex 760s, Most of ours (apart from USFF) have onboard VGA connector as well as an 'add-on' graphics card. The onboard connector is automatically disabled in BIOS so we have to use the add-on card.

If you have add-on graphics cards ...

check what you have plugged into, also pull the card and try the onboard connector. Try swapping the card.

If you don't have add-on cards (and the system is not USFF) have you a spare graphics adapter to try and bypass the onboard graphics?

Do you get anything at all on the screen, perhaps during POST?

Does the PC complete startup? Can you network to it, or use remote desktop?

If you don't see anything during post, and you don't have an add-on graphics adapter plugged in then log a call with DELL......

Were they bought from new?

As you acquired them in March they/it should be covered by the Dell one year warranty [at least one year, depending on what deal your Finance Department was able to get at purchase time]

So you might be able to spare yourself a lot of aggravation by calling Dell and getting an engineer on site or having the kit collected for repair.

Hi

Thanks for the advice, I tried swapping the hard drive with a known good machine and the problem followed. I reimaged the hard disk and the problem disappeared.

Thanks again

In that case it sounds as if the display adapter had been set to a resolution the monitor could not support.
