"Found new Hardware" after installing SP3

Since upgrading all our XP clients to Service Pack 3, we have noticed that whenever you plug in a USB device, the "Found new Hardware Wizard" apepars.

 

You then have to choose install automatically and press next a few times before this goes away and the device is ready to use. Previously this didn't happen - there was simply a delay whilst window found the device, then it would work.

 

Is there a way of setting up Windows so it automatically chooses "search for drivers automatically" and completes the wizard silently?

You can down grade security to install non signed drivers automatically but it will not search the internet for drivers automatically.

 

To do this right click my computer and click properties then the hardware tab and driver signing. I dont know off the top of my head if driver signing can be done through group policy.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've just tried that, and tested it by plugging in a Microsoft USB mouse. Unfortunately it still brings up the found new hardware wizard. Surely with USB and plug and play stuff it should just wait a few seconds then be ready to use?

I see you've fallen into the Microsoft "surely it should just....." trap!
