[ubuntu] radeon 9200 drivers???

For the past few hours ive been struggling to get graphics drivers working for a radeon 9200 (i know its old)

in ubuntu 8.10 intrepid.

Have tried installing xorg-driver-fglrx and the catalyst control centre ccc but on opening ccc it says

No ATI graphics driver is installed or it is not functioning properly. Please install the appropriate driver.

 

My installation is pretty clean and ive got no additional repos.

 

Any help would be appreciated as i'm shattered and this is starting to get to me especially after this summary of the xorg-driver-fglrx package

just a quick update, the situation has just got worse,

Now when I boot up I get the message telling me that ubuntu must run in low graphics mode for this session which is really starting to get me down.

I was starting to enjoy linux again but just as before it causes more problems than it solves

I'm not sure if it is the same but when i was installing my Nvidia card on 9.04 I installed the Nvidia drivers and then tried to open there X configure thing and got an error saying no nvidia drivers installed.

 

What I found was that even though I had installed the new drivers the old default ones that came with Ubuntu were over riding them on boot and I was still using the default ones. I had to remove the old ones manualy then install the nvidia ones (with no GUI) and then when I restarted it was fine.

this seems hopeful

right now im following some possible ideas on linuxquestions which say there is a glitch in the package but the gui installer works so i'm trying that

 

if that fails could you tell me where the old drivers are

yep as i thought the installer didn't work

OK ive given up on this for the night and won't be able to carry on working on this until approx 5:30PM GMT.

As a temporary solution ive uninstalled xorg-driver-fglrx and CCC and it is working fine as it used to but I do want to get the proper ati drivers working as some of my programs have problems running without them.

 

Please post any possible solutions but I won't be able to respond untill 5:30 so don't be offended

Have you tried System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to see whether Ubuntu prompts you to install fglrx or radeon drivers?

I tried that and it said you have no propitiatory drivers installed

Well ive decided to give up on this.

This post seems so helpful. Is this drivers for UBUNTO? i have been using UBunto before, it sounds very doubtful to used those features.
