Newbie to SP and ii7

Hello all

I am typically a hardware guy but I have been given the task of getting sharepoint site load balanced

I am pretty sure I have most of it but....

 

 

Should my Sharepoint admin have it setup so that when I connect to the frontends address it takes me right to the sharepoint page where I log in and then iis takes me where I need to go

 

 

So say I have a web frontend that is 192.168.1.98

Should it be setup so 192.168.1.98 takes me right to the sharepoint login or is it supposed to have :port /site name after the IP

 

I am asking because I am unsure if i need to setup my LB to redirect to just the IP or the IP with the site.

Right now if I hit 192.168.1.98 I just get a IIS7 logo I need to hit the IP with the port and site to get into sharepoint

 

Our Sharepoint person is also not a iis person. We all wear many different hats.

I am using a Foundry Server Iron load Balancer

I have some more info. I have been working with my load balanver and I have been able to kind of do what I want except I can't get it to work with sites that have a port number on them.

 

I am still learning this Sharepoint and IIS stuff but when our person creates new sites in Sharepoint they get a address like site.Ralph.org:1806 and the users have to hit that url with the port to get to the site.

I assume somewhere in SP I can make it so they can just hit site.ralph.org with no port at the end?

If you go into SharePoint Central Administration page, and the operations tab, you should find Alternate Access Mappings. Hopefully this'll do what you're after.

 

Try setting up an alternate access mapping with just a url and no port, and pointing the load-balancer at that one. All of the AAMs will need to be unique though.

I have tried to do it with the AAM but it seems that it adds the ports to the AAM that I create.

Can I just have all of the site collections run off of port 80?
