linkazoid Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Hi, We have recently taken over another building near to our school (about a mile away) and we wish for them to log on to our domain, as some of our kids will be there. We would like to put a server over there and replicate between our server over the internet. Has anyone done this, or could point me in the right direction of where to start. We have a vanilla network and all xp sp3 clients. Cheers, Michael
6Foot2 Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 (edited) Hi, We are in a consortium of three schools. Our networks are linked in a Parent/Child Domain structure. Each school has its own domain [Child Domain] and in each school there is a Parent Domain domain controller. The link is provided through dedicated lines supplied and supported by our Grid [iSP] Don't know if this answers your question as you probably don't want a Parent/Child Domain setup but you could ask your ISP to provide for a similar linkage as we have between our schools? EduTech Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I would setup a VPN between to two sites if your going to do this as well and let the servers talk through that so it stays secure.
p858snake Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 If your close enought, you could probably talk to your telco and see if you can lay soem cabling in their outside tunnels, i know some in Australia used to rent the space out to people that wanted to run between buildings.

tmcd35 Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 What server OS are you running? Server 08R2 has a new feature called "BranchCache" that may be very handy in this scenario.

Domino Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 I'd also investigate cost of putting in a leased line from BT My last place had two sites about 1.5 miles apart, and we used this method to provide a completely transparent network infrastructure. Once it was in it required next to no maintenance.
