WOL between HP Procurve 5406zl switches

At my two main sites i have a 5406zl as my core switches these are then connected by a LES. I have samller school which is connected to the LES via a HP 5304 switch.

 

If I send out a WOL packet on one of my main sites it only works on that site and the smaller school it does not get to the other main site. So it appears that the 5406 blocks incoming wol packets but the 5304 dosent!!

 

I have had a look at logs and there is nothing, cant find anything on interweb to suggest what to do! Any one with a simple suggestion to solve this annoyance!

Firmware update? I'd be surprised if it is blocking WOL packets though

WOL is a directed broadcast which is blocked by lots of networking gear including switches. You will need to allow it in the switch config using whatever hps specific command is.

I could understand a router or firewall but not a switch in its default settings. Our 5412zl doesn't which is essentially the same switch.

If it has any layer 3 abilities or traffic shapeing ability then this kind of block is not unexpected. Don't know the hp product lines to well but given the higher numbers I assumed that it may well have some of these features. Our Cisco 3750s did this for WOLs that were directed broadcast (ie pushed to a specific subnet) it worked ok for very basic ones on the same subnet but if the software was more advanced and specified more directly it would block them. Yup, worked on some stuff with an assorted bunch of HPs not long ago, this (directed broadcast) was one minor ingredient and I think that and it being relative to feature sets is spot on.

The only thing I know that will block it in a default config is port authentication (all traffic is blocked to a "down" port with auth, you can enable traffic out when port is down instead to get it working).

 

I'd be more suspicious of what the second LES was doing with broadcast traffic. Assuming all are same vlan?
