Bridging connections

I know this may be a bit out of place but here we go anyway.

My wireless router is upstairs, and my xbox 360 is downstairs. I want to get updates for my 360 games so i decided to use my laptop to get internet to it.

I did the basics and connected everything, it all said connected, but for some reason i could not get internet on either device, even though i was connected to the router.

I turned off the firewall, nothing.

I tried to tick the box in wireless connections, properties, advanced that allows you to share your internet with other devices. I got an error message that said it couldnt as the IP address it wanted was in use.

I changed the ip address of the router from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.10. Same error.

I changed the ip on my laptop to a static of 192.168.0.5. Same error.

I walked off in a huff.

Could anyone please help, i just want the team updates on fifa for heavens sake

As far as I know the ICS component of windows is particularly thick and uses a static configuration on the shareing side. In your case this means that on one side you have your router which is on the 192.168.0.x network and on the shareing side the system will also attempt to be on the 192.168.0.x network as it always staticly configures to 192.168.0.1.

 

Because both interfaces, the one to your network and the one to your xbox are in the same range windows cannot route between them and issues occour.

 

You should be able to get around this by configuring your home router on the 172.16.x.x network which will allow windows to route from your xbox to your home network.

 

 

Not sure if you have tried this from your original post but bridging mode should do this much better than ICS. Both networks need to be connected at the time then you select both connections right click and bridge it. These interfaces cannot be running ICS or firewall though.

Ah cheers mate. Sorry i wasn't clear, but i did try bridging first with no success.

I read through your link and i didn't set the network bridge an IP address, i just left it alone.. Is this what could be wrong?

Should still work off DHCP from your router (did in my case) but you could try setting it manually or just changing the home routers ip range and using ICS.
