ranj Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 Hi Just had a quick question. I believe this is possible but just wanted to check, we need to get 2008 installed on our new servers quickly, I was hoping to wait till r2 came out and install that instead but because time is not on our side I think I am going to have to install 2008. Can I ask if its a simple upgrade to r2 if say we installed x64 version of windows 2008 on our domain controllers? is it like 2003 where you install an extra cd and that then makes its R2? If its similar with 2008 r2 that would be ideal. Thanks
Richie1972 Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 We're pretty much in the same position. We bought Win2k8 in June for our new servers - with the imminent release of Win2k8r2 we would have to buy all new licences to use it... There may be an upgrade option to it, but it is too much of a change of operating system for it to be like Win2k3r2 - ie just a second CD install
tmcd35 Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 @Richie_OLSJ - If you bought Win2k8 in June, how come you didn't buy Software Assurance with it? I bought a couple of copies of Vista Enterprise around the same time and bought them with SA. I'll also be buying Win2k8 with SA if R2 hasn't been released by the time I ready to buy (unless there is now automatic upgrade rights with new purchases?).
DMcCoy Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 Not going to be like 2003 R2. 2003 was just additional utils. 2008 R2 is based on Windows 7 unlike 2008 which was Vista.
featured_spectre Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 thankfully R2 is based on W7, which means full compliance with W7, aswell as full backwards compatability (2008 whilst it worked, did have some issues with W7 according to MS Devs). So it illeviates so many problems, especially seeing as just over half of the schools I know personally are switching to 2k8R2 and W7.

Richie1972 Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 @tmcd35 lack of money - we're trying to get what we can while we can (once we're swallowed up by BSF we'll have no chance of buying anything we want - especially as we're looking at around 3-4 years before our school's re-furb is complete). I've already cut back on my plans more than I'd have liked
IanT Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 I've managed to get 2008 R2 RTM (Volume License) ISO Installed it on a test Server at the office and oh my god, what a big improvement, very W7, good features! my fav is the Recycle Bin for AD
