i tried everything, but none of it would work, when I tried to delete the registry key it said unable to delete all specified files

and the easier way to do this is to right click the steam.exe and select PROPERTIES not compatibility, then there will be a compatibility tab, click apply these settings for all users, then uncheck the box, but thanks anyway

With windows 7/vista just hit the start button/orb/start menu and type the word "run" in and hit enter.

Count me among those who say thank you! What kind of stupid design is this from microsoft - just forcing some crap on people without giving them a real chance to do anything about it. *grrrr*

But thanks :)

I recently downloaded fabel 3 through steam and when i try to play it before it loads a message pops up that says improper shutdown detected then the game starts up gets all the way to the main menu then when i thry to play it it trys to load but as it loads the screen goes black and it goes back to windows. I have treid reinstaling several times (fabel and steam) i have gone through every steam troubleshoot list, downloaded every driver and update they told me. i have posted on the steam forums and lionhead forums and nobody has been able to help. i tried to change the compatibility setings by folowing this forum but it hasent changed any thing. I am not great with things of this nature so if you could help it would be very apriciated.

Hey,

So whenever I get to step 3 which is looking for an entry with a path to steam.exe I get stuck. Only 3 entries come up, 2 of which are for bit torrent and the other is default.. Not sure if I was in the right place looking or if I had to do something that I didn't do. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to post this. I see it's from a while ago but it still works on Windows 7 32bit, just in case anyone was wondering.

Thank you so much for this thread it really helped me. I just started using steam today so i was really disapointed that it wasn't working. I'm also not the most educated when it comes to technology but this answer was really simple and i fixed my problem within minutes. I'll definately check back here with more of my questions

Hi ZeroHour,

I created an account on here just to say a big THANK YOU for taking the effort to post that, I've been trying to figure out how to fix that issue since yesterday and even did a full reformat to try and get rid of it.

THANKS!

^ What he said.

Anyone that did ZeroHour's fix that is still having problems must also delete the steam instance in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\AppCompatFlags\ Compatibility Assistant\Persisted This problem should only "Have" to be addressed if you hit cancel when Steam said it was running in compatibility mode, however I had to do both this and ZeroHour's fix. btw thanks for that.
