Weird MyDocs issue

Hi guys

 

I've got a weird issue that seems to be spreading throughout our school. At first I put it down to thick kids messing around but it's become so prevalent, and affects decent kids, so it almost certainly can't be that. Anyway, the problem is that with some kids in ICT lessons (or at least they're the only ones reporting it to us), any folders and their contents within My Documents get moved to My Pictures. Any files in the root of My Docs appear to vanish. Clearly we need to get this sorted but it's such a bizarre issue that we aren't really sure where to start. I'm a fairly small cog in a large machine so although I'm pretty experienced with servers, I haven't really had much to do with the one in question. However I'll try and find out answers to any questions you might ask.

 

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'd start looking for GPO changes, particularly to the Folder Redirection parts of said policies.

Would that move files that were already there though? I would have assumed it would just point you somewhere else when trying to connect to your home drive?

There are options that will move files, yes.

I wonder if it's more to do with home drives not being mapped correctly, so Windows uses a default local directory as a temporary save location would could explain why documents are disappearing.

Have you had any joy with this? Another thing to check are the event logs on the local machine if My Documents isn't being correctly mapped. It's usually permissions which is at the heart of the problem.

Good point. I've seen this sort of thing when profiles that have been 'copied' using Explorer rather than the UI. This means the permissions within the registry prevent folder redirection from working properly.
