Birmingham schools - recording tv programmes

Hi

 

I wonder if anyone who works in a Birmingham school may have the answer to this. I know of the Educational Recording Agency Licence which allows schools to record tv programmes and show them in class in a educational scenario, but does anyone know if Birmingham City Council have this licence for all schools or does each school have to purchase it?

 

Also if a school does not have this licence, I presume you cannot record tv programmes and show them in class and certainly not make copies of those recordings. Would I be correct in this thinking?

As far as I know most LAs have purchased a PVL license to cover all their schools this will allow them to broadcast TV whether it be recorded or Live plus original DVDs for educational purposes only, not for using on rainy day breaks to entertain the kids.

 

That is what I have been told by my LA.

I would check though as your LA may do things differently.

I'd be interested in what others views are on this. Feature DVDs clearly state for home use only and prohibit vieing in educational establishments. Now I know that, over the next few days, our teachers will be showing dozens of videos that the kids have brought in. They also know that, strictly speaking, this is illegal but what should we ICT guys be doing about it? Personally, I will explain the situation to our HT and leave it to him.

If school registers with correct people then you can show the videos no problem not sure of license of top of my head.

PVSL license for viewing DVDs - you're supposed to send a list of films viewed back on a quarterly basis - but if anyone can suggest a workable way of getting teachers to declare when they've sat watching a film, rather than teaching, I'd be interested to hear it...

Usually the LA purchases ERA or ERA+ and it covers all their schools.
