Hi I wonder if anyone who works in a Birmingham school may have the answer to this. I know of the Educational Recording Agency Licence which allows schools to record tv programmes and show them in class in a educational scenario, but does anyone know if Birmingham City Council have this licence for all schools or does each school have to purchase it? Also if a school does not have this licence, I presume you cannot record tv programmes and show them in class and certainly not make copies of those recordings. Would I be correct in this thinking?

peo i was in the same situation as you. I went with CSNM. Nothing but good words from me about CSNM. Quick support, very helpful even when I came out with some noob questions. we have our domain (Sheldon Heath Community Arts College) with BGfL. We got a static IP address from CSNM. Then all we did was ask BGfL/Link2ICT to create a subdomain (web.shheldonheath.bham.sch.uk) which pointed to the static IP address we got from CSNM. Then they jsut create a redirect page in your SINA webspace. So when someone types in http://www.sheldonheath... they get sent to the website hosted by CSNM via the redirect. So no it wont affect your mymail, etc.

i dont suppose if i wanted it for personal use they would give me that deal?

Hi all I am after Microsoft Office 2007 Small Business edition which is to be installed on 7 pc's so i need 7 licences. does anyone know of a really cheap way of getting these? i looked on a few sites and they are asking for £240 ust for 1 licence (cd) which will cost £1680!!!

i admit it does appear like virus like behaviour but we have symantec vp 4 with the latest definitions, surely that would have picked anything up?

Really strange problem. Anyone come across this. IE7 closes for no reason. We are an RM CC3 site. Happens to different computers and different users. You can be viewing a website, or webmail or eportal and it will just closes unexpectedly.

hi yes its the school website no streaming other than perhaps one video quite a few pictures normal newsletter, news, etc. yes i am using joomla for the site.

Hi all Those people who have their school website hosted externally, can i ask how much bandwidth you are using every month? I have signed up for 30gb per month but am concerned it is not going to be enough.

you guys have got me thinking. i never even thought about the ni and tax side. i wonder if i just set up the network and not do the support side and i ask them for a lump sum of say £500 for setting the network up

is that £25 per hour for the maintenance as well or is that just for the install? also i may have to be on call, so as i said if i am needed 4 hours per evening but they never actually call me on that evening, how do you work that out? do yu still charge them the same rate per hour even though you havent done any work?

Hi all I may become involved in a project out of school hours that will involve setting up a network from scratch for a business which will consist of 10 pc's, router, switch, waps, sbs 2003, etc. This also invloves setting up server 2003 including all dns, dhcp, gpo stuff. I would also be doing the maintenance too which is a bigger job really than the installation itself. How much would you charge for your services?

how long has csnm been in business if you dont mind me asking? the reason i ask is that i dont want to go with a webhost and 5 minutes later they go under. it has happened to me in the past.

thanks for the replies guys. couple of questions: should i go for a linux web server option or a windows one? we already have our domain (xxx.bham.sch.uk) if i get an external web host and not use l2ict/bgfl how do i transfer the domain over? for example if someone types in xxx.bham.sch.uk how do i get them to see the new website rather than the old one?

Hi I am developing our school website using Joomla and its not far off completion. I work in a school in Birmingham and we have our static (old) website hosted by BGfL+. They however do not support Joomla on BGfL+ so I am looking for an external web host that does support Joomla. Do any of you guys know of a good web host that you can vouch for that support PHP, MySQL and Joomla?

Hi all I hope someone can help. I am working on a site that looks great in 1280 x 768 res. when i drop it to 1024x768 or 800x600 the header which is 1000x185 extends beyond the template itself and the template is not centred anymore, its gone to the left. i believe this is to do with fluid v fixed, but im not sure. I read somewhere about if you a have a header where its uniform, you can slice a vertical section that will be repeated and add some lines of code to the css to tell it to repeat when there is a different resolution. does anyone know of a good tutorial they could point me to that explains how to do this? bottom is 1280 (how i want it to look) and top is how it looks if desktop rs is changed to 800x600

Hi, I am currently working on our Joomla website on my local machine, but I was just wondering, what is it that actually gets uploaded to our webspace? Is it just the htdocs folder? Or do I have to install the Joomla package and xampp onto the ftp first?

I made the design myself simply using divs, a header and footer image and banner images for the right hand side. I spent I would say a good month on it, including still doing all my other duties. Had I received the content from teachers I asked for it would have been done in 2 weeks or so. Couldnt say how much it cost, its in my job description. This site is infact just the start. I want to add all sorts of nteractivity, podcasting, vle's etc. but not with straight html and css. Once I've learnt abit more about Joomla I hope to move the entire site to it. Then I hope to go to twon on it. The school I am at has never had a website, this is the first. Ive put Google analytics code on the site. The site has been up for 10 days exactly after 12pm tonight. In that time we have had 672 visits, 415 absolute unique visitors, etc. so I think we are receiving some good traffic. Probably 1/4 of the school dont know about it yet, much of the public dont know about it, its not indexed by Google yet.
