Moodle security

Hi,

 

I've just got back from the ICT education conference in Birmingham, very worthwhile, and a was wondering if anyone can clarify something for me.

 

There were a few companies there trying to sell Moodle, or rather the setup, configuration, maintenance etc and one thing that was said was that if I just install the free version of Moodle it doesn't conform to all of the latest data security requirements. Is this true or is it just sales speak?

 

Is there anything in particular I should be looking out for when installing Moodle within school?

Sale-speak. No such thing as "Free Moodle" and "Paid-For Moodle", all you get is paying someone to do the configuration for you.

 

Ensure you're using SSL, and permissions are correct, etc. It's all they're going to do.

 

Simply scare tactics for uninformed school leaders.

Major, major FUD!

 

Care to name and shame? If they are Moodlers of any repute then to use this FUD will be seriously frowned on by other Moodlers. I would also ask the same question over on moodle.org.

Which companies? We need to know!!!!

They must not -should not - be Moodle partners as you would hope they had more respect than to do that.

Thanks for the info. I thought it sounded odd but was worth checking first.

 

As much as I would love to name and shame I don't think it's appropriate. However they were at the ICT for education conference yesterday and sat in the corner booth and like to offer the internet in any place.....

Got it.

They are probably being over over cautious because perhaps some of their moodles got spammed a while ago..

Say no more ... but their sales pitch is more a reflection on them and prior poor practice, rather than them being more secure than other moodle partners, or something you would run in house..
