RAM for 2008 Mac Pro

Got the early 2008 Mac Pro with the stock 2Gb ( 2 * 1gb memory modules )

 

Been looking on crucial and found the 8gb kit which is 197 quid ( 2 * 4Gb mem modules )

 

Looking around and if you refer to the last post on this site

suggests 4 * 2 gb mem modules for 8 gigs but what I want to do is get 8 gigs and add that to the 2 gigs already in there

 

Performance wise would it be better to get

 

2 * 4gb mem modules ( as in the 8gb kit )

 

or to do as it states there and to buy 4 * 2 gb memory modules ( obvoiusly this would take up more memory slots )

The answers are all there. FWIW I have 6GB in mine and it has x2 2GB sticks and the stock memory that came with it. Performance is fine. I am due to upgrade the stock memory though so that I have x4 2GB sticks because this would be a "best performance" fit.

so performance wise I would be better with the 4 lots of 2gb modules versus 2 lots of 4gb memory modules ?

 

Or would it not make much difference - just thinking that for the use of setting up virtual machines I would like to upgrade the memory more as obviously want to have server 2003 / 2008 and some windows clients and am guessing that doing that would obviously use the memory up.

 

I did see a useful post on that site I posted earlier on ( which I am guessing you already know about ) that you need to keep the original memory you got with your mac pro in case you need to send it back to apple for repairs.

 

Also where did you buy your memory from ? crucial ?
