Moodle problem with PDF Files

Hey

 

Putting together an example course on a new moodle install, 1.8.9+ Build 20090603, before giving staff\pupils access. So far all is well apart from viewing pdf files.

 

When i add a resource, link to a pdf file, either in same window or new window the pdf will not load.

 

see attached screen shot.

 

At the bottom of the screen shot not shown is a link labelled, Direct Link to this File. Click on this link and the pdf loads no problem.

 

I have tried this on IE 6 \ 7 and 8. with adobe reader 7 and foxit. same issue.

 

However if i create a directory resource and then click on the pdf file in the directory the file loads ok. It appears to be something to do with embedded pdf files in a web page.

 

Any help or pointers?

I tend to use the "Force Dowload" option for pdf/word docs etc so they open properly in acrobat rather than within a window in the browser... However the problem looks to be browser related... Have you tried a different browser? Have you tried updating your PDF reader (Acrobat?)?

I had similar issues a while back and found it to be down to the newer versions of Adobe Reader (in fact it is a known issue with them - a problem displaying some PDF's inside of Internet Explorer - can't remember the specifics). Basically I got around it by deploying version 8 for a while.

 

Since then I have reverted to setting links up with the Force Download box ticket - it's much easier and the user gets a larger view of the document.

Thanks, force download?? what version of moodle are you using? using 1.8.9+ here. I dont see the force download option when setting up the link.

Just found this on moodle docs.... From Moodle 1.9 onwards, you can choose whether to force files stored in Moodle to be downloaded, rather than being displayed in the browser window.

 

Will upgrade.

Had a problem with pdf's here as well. Don't recall the exact nature.

Solution was to link to the directory that contained the pdf's not the file itself.

You really should make sure you keep your Moodle up to date!
