Moodle and Secure LDAP?

Having seen some interesting ideas for what I can do with Moodle and other systems if we finally go for student accounts (8000 part time learners is why we haven't until now ) I now need to get my head around the authentication issues...

 

Our Moodle is hosted externally so the login connection I guess would have to go over Internet so I've read ldaps would be required but can't find much info about it being used in anger anywhere. Anyone doing anything like this who could shed some light on it?

Ask your external provider? Ours is very knowledgeable about stuff like this (ULCC), we authenicate our moodle back to our AD
