Guest richard_s Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I forgotten how to set up dns to allow people to view the schools website which is hosted by a 3rd party. I know I need to create a CNAME but for the life of me I can't remember if I need to create an Alias as well. The school is running windows 2003 server.
SYNACK Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Is this for internal users looking out to the web or external users looking for it. If its internal are you using a different name for it or something as should it not resolve the propper address right off the internet. If it is external internet users looking to the site you may need to contact your domain name registrar or whoever hosts your external DNS as this is not generally handled by an internal DNS server.
SYNACK Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Oh and to add an internal CNAME have a look at this post: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/networks/18858-iis-eclipse-automatically-goes-server-eclipse-index-jsp.html#post187157

Whats happened is this the school, is having a website created by an outside company who are going to host it. What I need to do is to to create entries in the dns so that when they try and go to http://www.blah.blah.sch.uk it sends them to http://www.blagh.blagh.co.uk The hosters have said that they need to update the www entry in the dns with a CNAME entry pointing to http://www.blagh.blagh.co.uk but for the life of me I cannot get it to work.

SYNACK Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Yes you would only need the first two images worth of the config from the example but this will only affect traffic from inside the school. Any outside traffic will be consulting the external DNS servers of the web so you will need to contact whoever hosts your current domain name .sch.uk and get them to add the required CNAME value so that this redirection will work for people outside the school.
